Component fundamentals

What Is a Bare Laser Diode Chip?

A bare laser diode chip, also called a laser die, is the semiconductor light-emitting element before it is integrated into a finished mechanical and electrical package. Depending on its architecture, the chip incorporates an active region, optical cavity, contact areas and relevant wavelength-control structures.

At this supply stage, the OEM may be responsible for die bonding, wire bonding, heat removal, optical alignment and device protection. This offers integration freedom, but it also demands the appropriate manufacturing processes and qualification plan.

Device architecture

Laser Chip Technologies & Supply Directions

Optical behavior depends on the semiconductor architecture, not simply the outer package. We evaluate the required emission characteristics and available supply format before recommending a chip or packaged product.

Edge emitting · FP

Fabry–Perot Laser Chips

FP devices use an optical cavity formed by reflecting facets. They can suit OEM projects where optical output, operating mode, package flexibility and practical integration drive component selection.

Wavelength selective · DFB

DFB Laser Chips & Devices

DFB architecture introduces wavelength-selective feedback and is used in demanding sensing and communication applications. Bare-die availability and specifications are evaluated for each project.

Surface emitting · VCSEL

VCSEL Chip Integration

VCSEL structures emit perpendicular to the semiconductor surface. They are relevant to compact near-infrared sensing and precision photonic integration; the final supply form depends on the design.

Engineering selection

What to Define Before Requesting a Laser Chip

An effective bare-die RFQ is more than a wavelength inquiry. The following information helps us assess the appropriate device, supply form, integration constraints and technical documents.

01 · Optical requirement

Target Wavelength & Spectral Behavior

Specify center wavelength or range, spectral width, wavelength tuning needs and any application-specific absorption or communication requirement.

02 · Source performance

Output Power & Operating Mode

Provide required optical power, CW / QCW / pulsed operation, duty cycle and operating temperature where relevant.

03 · Chip integration

Die Dimensions & Thermal Interface

Describe mounting area, die attach method, thermal path, electrical interconnect, polarity and packaging constraints.

04 · Commercial readiness

Project Stage & Order Requirement

Include prototype or production phase, estimated quantity, testing expectations, documentation needs and target delivery schedule.

OEM design decision

Bare Laser Chip vs Packaged Laser Diode

A chip-level purchase shifts more assembly and qualification work to the OEM. A packaged laser diode provides a defined interface and may integrate protective, thermal and optical features depending on its design.

How we work

Laser Chip OEM Project Support

Lumi supports upstream photonic component cooperation from technical requirement discussion through product matching and sourcing coordination. Each project is evaluated against the available device and manufacturing route.

01 / Requirement Review

Define Application & Optical Targets

We review wavelength, power, architecture, temperature, interface and use-case constraints to clarify the intended component level.

02 / Device Evaluation

Select Supply Form

We discuss whether bare die, chip-on-submount or a completed package is appropriate, subject to the confirmed product availability and customer integration capability.

03 / Technical Alignment

Review Drawings & Test Needs

Where available, the project review covers device drawings, electrical and optical testing conditions, handling constraints and qualification requirements.

04 / Commercial Coordination

Sample & Production Discussion

We align expected quantity, lead-time requirements and longer-term sourcing needs before quoting the confirmed configuration.

Use cases

The application list describes engineering directions, not a claim that every bare-chip architecture is approved or available for every use.

Technical reference

Architecture and Package Are Different Decisions

DFB, FP and VCSEL refer to the semiconductor laser architecture. TO-can, butterfly and fiber-coupled refer to packaging or optical output configurations. These selection dimensions can be combined.

When a customer requires a finished optical source rather than a bare chip, we can evaluate an appropriate package and interface within our available laser diode range.

Frequently asked questions

Questions About Bare Laser Chip Supply

What is the difference between a laser chip and a laser diode?

A laser chip is the semiconductor die at an upstream assembly stage. A packaged laser diode adds mechanical, electrical, thermal and potentially optical integration features. In industrial terminology, “laser diode” can also describe the semiconductor device itself, so the required delivery form should always be specified in an RFQ.

Does Lumi support custom laser chip OEM projects?

Yes. Lumi accepts project-based OEM inquiries and reviews wavelength, architecture, optical power, operating conditions and integration requirements before confirming a suitable device and supply arrangement.

Can I order any DFB, FP or VCSEL product as a bare die?

Not necessarily. Bare-die availability is model-specific. Some devices may be offered only in TO-can, SMD, butterfly or fiber-coupled formats. Contact us with the required architecture and wavelength for confirmation.

What technical information should I send for a quotation?

Please provide the intended application, target wavelength, required optical power, CW / QCW / pulsed operating mode, chip or packaging preference, working temperature and estimated sample or production quantities. A drawing or existing device reference is helpful where available.

Can Lumi also supply a packaged solution?

Yes. For customers without chip-level bonding and optical assembly facilities, we can discuss available packaged laser diodes such as TO-can, butterfly and fiber-coupled options.
